Get Fit with the Whole Family (She: Nichole)

Hello there, my name is Nichole and I am so excited to be a guest author on "Or so she says..."! I love to read it so when Mariel and Jessica invited me to blog with them, I jumped at the chance!

I have been blogging for the last three years and am definitely one of those in the "addicted" category. I have a few blogs check out my newest blog for great music reviews, recipes a little of everything. I just celebrated my 30th birthday, which sounded a little more scary than it actually was. I am single as you can be and loving it! Don't get me wrong, I love kids and men and want them eventually, but I am also loving where I am in life. I have a few small businesses, a cooking business and a wedding/party planning business and I work at a gym. Which, leads to what I am blogging about today.

Every year we women set a goal to get into shape, lose a few pounds or get more active. So I am here with a few tips to not only help you, but your whole family as well!

First lets start with those little ones. Full of energy and always needing something to do. Let me recommend a great way to harness a little bit of that energy.

ABC Yoga Kids DVD is a great way to introduce kids to funny movements and the alphabet. It is recommended for ages 3-6 years, the younger they are the fewer letters they will get through, but it is fun and you can even join them. Just watch out with Jabberwacky Jelly Fish...adults don't do so well with that one. You can see a video of kids enjoying this yoga work out here.

When they grow out of Yoga Kids, advance them Tae-Bo Kicks for kids. Boys really enjoy this one and this is one that you can do with the kids and still work up a sweat yourself! Kids of all ages and body types are part of the group and if they can do it, so can your kids.

A gym membership can always help you out, but with out childcare or a buddy, not as effective as you might like. So, take a few minutes a day and try one of these for yourself.

1. Check out www.Yogatoday.com for a few minutes of all levels Yoga for free. You can fall in love with one work out or try something new everyday.

2. For those who like to run or just wish you did, download this Couch to 5k podcast (for ipods or any mp3 player) by Robery Ullery. He coaches you on running, starting out with only running for 60 seconds and walking for two minutes. Gradually you up your running time and in nine weeks you are ready to run a 5k! Either outside or a treadmill, this is a great program and easy too. I recommend the Ogden Marathon 5k coming up in May, that is where you'll find this running enthusiast.

3. Find a workout video you can do at home, I recommend Simply Pilates, Tae-bo, The Biggest Loser Boot Camp or Belly Dancing (and no husband will mind!).

There are a million ways to get or stay active, these are just some of my favorites. Have a great Sunday and keep reading "Or so she says..."!

Great ideas Nichole. I never thought to download a podcast to tell me how to train for a 5k!

Great Ideas! The main reason I make it to the gym 5 days a week is because my 3 year old loves to go there and play with his little "buddies" at the gyms child-care! Some mornings he begs to go to the gym when I would rather be lazy...but I'm always SO happy he did! Both my 10 & 3 year old ask me to teach them moves I learned in my yoga class....I love it...sometimes when there is a little too much excitement in the car I start an impromptu yoga class...and have the boys do breathing exercises with me...it always calms us all down and we usually end up laughing too! Thanks for the kids yoga DVD suggestion...I'll check it out!

I'm so glad you mentioned belly dancing! My mom is in her late 50s and she takes belly dance classes every week. She absolutely loves them and it is such a great way to exercise!
