Quest For The Best: Leap Frog Handhelds

Flying in airplanes with kids, grocery shopping, waiting in Doctor's offices and Leap Frog products just seem to go together. Leap Frog is always making my life less stressful. And, bonus: it's educational. And, unlike many blogs...I'm not getting paid to say this. I know lots of parents are anti-video games. But, for this...you should reconsider. All the games that Leap Frog offers are educational. So, the guilty feelings just float away. I recommend this particular Leapster for ages 3 to 7. There is a newer version of the Leapster available, but I haven't seen enough improvements in it to warrant the extra bucks.

There are lots of fun games, from Cars to Spongebob to Disney Princesses. But, there is one that I highly recommend. It's called Letters on the Loose. It's funny because of all the super-fun-sounding Leapster games we have, my kids always want to play this one! I love it because it's a great game for learning the alphabet!
I LOVE this one, it got stellar reviews on Amazon and my little 4 year old loves it too. He loves that he can practice writing his letters (in a game format) but also practice drawing pictures too!

So, for the older kids, Leap Frog has put out the Didj. My older son has one, but I don't recommend it.

At about the age of 7, kids start to wise up and realize that there are way cooler things in life...like the Nintendo DS. And, they become too cool (at least my son thinks he is). So, basically it was a waste of my money. However, for the no-video-games-allowed kids it might be great fun...especially if Leap Frog would come out with some more games. There are only a handful of games for it, and new ones never seem to be released.

We also have the Leap Frog Tag. The pen, when touching different spots on the story book pages, allows for games or stories to be read. My little boy (4 1/2) plays it but he would choose his Leapster over his Tag, any day. So, mixed feelings on this. I like that the books are fairly priced. But, I don't like that only a handful of books will fit in the memory of the Tag. So, everytime your child wants to try different books you have to hook the tag up to the computer and unload books and reload new ones. It's not a big deal, but when you have four kids all clammering for snacks, diaper changes, and attention...it's last on my list.

we don't have any of the handheld leapfrogs but we do have the v-smile. we love it. i love that they think they are playing video games but learning too. I may have to invest in one of the handhelds. we seemed to be out a lot lately & that would be great for my sanity. thanks!

Hey, I'm a friend of Becca's. She introduced me to your fun blog.

Love the shout out for Leapsters. We are a huge fan here at this house as well. One of my kids faves is Creature Create.
