The Blood Type Diet


Alright, so someone told me about this new diet.  Actually I don't even know if it is new or not, but I found it very interesting.  I have not tried it but in reading about it I think I would like to, just to see what happens.  It is called the "Blood Type Diet."  It is based on the 4 blood types and each diet is customized to each blood type.  


"You are what you eat."  Dr. Peter D' Adamo's research uncovers how true this saying really is.  Every day what you eat and put into your body influences your:
  • Energy Levels
  • Healthy Weight
  • Mental Clarity
  • Ability to Handle Stress
Why Can't We Just All Eat Donuts?

It seems your neighbor can eat all kinds of breakfast breads and pastries and not gain a pound, you on the other hand gain 10 pounds and the cinnamon and chocolate covered donuts also give you digestive problems.  Why?

The key is found in protein molecules called "lectins."  Because all of us are different our bodies react differently to these lectins, in good and bad ways.  Of all the genetic characteristics you have inherited, only one characteristic will help you predict these interactions and help you stay healthy; your blood type.  

For example, those with type O blood type, the lectins in wheat bind with cellular receptors in the gut and can lead to the symptoms often mistaken for an "upset stomach."  Excess exposure to to the wrong lectins can lead to other more chronic health conditions.  

Type A
Type A's generally have lower levels of stomach acid, so it's harder to digest meats and fats.   A diet based on soy proteins, vegetables and grains.  Type A's typically have a naturally higher level of the stress hormone cortisol.  To help balance cortisol levels Dr. D'Adamo suggests a diet low in sugar. 

Type B
Type B's should avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. Each of these foods affect the the efficiency of your metabolic process, leading to fatigue, fluid retention and hypoglycemia.  When you eliminate these foods your blood sugars should remain normal after meals.  A diet with vegetables and lean meats such as lamb, veal, rabbit and venison are recommended.  

Type O
Type O's should focus on a diet of lean meats, vegetables and fruits.  They should stay away from dairy and wheat- these trigger digestive issues.  Type O's also are also predisposed to certain illnesses such as ulcers and thyroid disorders.  Type O's usually have more stomach acid contributing to digestive disorders and ulcers.  

Type AB
Type AB blood is rare- found in less than 5% of the population.  AB blood types are a combination of A and B characteristics.  They have type A's low stomach acid, however they have B's adaptation to meats.  Therefore, you lack enough stomach acid to metabolize them efficiently and the meat you eat tends to get stored as fat.  Focus on foods such as tofu, seafood, dairy and green vegetables.  Avoid all smoked and cured meats.  These can cause cancer in people with low stomach acid.

Love the post, Jess! Sound like some interesting stuff. It's worth looking into for sure. So many people in my family have digestive problems, I wonder if some info from this book would help out. I read some reviews on this book on Amazon and it was pretty much all really good. Hmmm...

Type O-stay away from DAIRY and WHEAT? I think I wanna change my blood type...

Thanks for posting this. I did read about his about 8-10 years ago or so and tried it. And I do notice that the things it says to avoid for my blood type are actually things that I've found I should in fact avoid. I do think there is some truth to this. At least for me it proves to be true.
