~ The Best Flat Irons For Your Hair ~

Lucky for me, my future sis-in-law, Kristy, is a fantastic hairdresser (and amazing person)! Score! She's been doing hair for the past 10 years and now runs her own beautiful salon here in Utah...Salon Synergy. So, any time I need my hair done, advice, product...I know where to go. Rebecca asked me a while back to do a post on the best flat irons for hair...I know what I use to straighten the party on my head...but, I wanted to hear the advice of a REAL pro.

Here's the scoop, courtesy of Kristy:

Her Favorite Flat Iron - T3 Bespoke

This picture is of the newer version, the Wet/Dry. This will straighten your hair and dry it at the same time so that you don't have to damage it twice (first, with the blow dryer). It heats up to 450 degrees and won't even lose heat when applied to cold/wet hair! This is made out of "tourmaline" which increases ionic energy which equals sealing the cuticles of your hair...which equals less frizz. We like less frizz, yes we do. Kristy also likes the T3 because it is more "rounded" than the others, which makes the iron double as a curling iron...rather than kinking iron. The other bonus of buying a T3 (from a reputable shop) is that it includes a 4 year warranty. That's huge. I can't tell you the number of flat irons we have gone through in my family. The extra cost is probably worth it. This model retails for $200. Or, the older version (not a wet/dry) is just as well loved. It retails for $160. I know, I know...not the Wal-Mart prices you like to hear but you will get your money's worth.

2nd Place Flat Iron - Farouk Chi

Holy Cow, the Chi has drastically dropped in price! Back when I bought mine it was around $150. Now you can find them for $69...but make sure they aren't imitation! There are imitation ones made that are only ceramic plated...which leads to product buildup and burnt hair. Buy from a store that has a good reputation. The Chi is a great iron. It's solid ceramic and has a big following! Kristy has found that the standard black color seems to hold up longer than the cutsie pink or patterned ones that are sold. These will likely retail upwards of $100 dollars in a salon.

3rd Place Flat Iron - Babyliss
A lot of women who want to save money buy the Babyliss from Kristy's salon. It retails at $75, but you can now find the even better Chi iron for even less! The Babyliss is only ceramic plated and has just a few month warranty. But, it is a far better iron than what you will buy at Wal-Mart. Not to dis on Wal-Mart, but Kristy claims the cheaper the iron the more product build-up, the less heat it puts off, less ions, and the irons usually aren't very rounded on the edges for good curls. Don't waste your money.
Basically, this is what it comes down to....if you want a good, solid, reputable flat iron that is a great price then get a Chi. If you want to go for the gold and a 4 year warranty tickles your fancy then you want a T3. Why I even mentioned the Babyliss...I don't know.

What's been your experience with flat irons???

I have a flat iron by "Her Styler" that's bright green, it's 100% ceramic and I LOVE IT. I haven't tried many different ones to be honest so I can't compare. BUT, my hair ranges from thin to way corse thick strands and I have a TON OF IT! It takes me FOREVER to curl it with a curling iron, but with this flat Iron I can straighten or curl it in 10-12 minutes, which blows my mind. Here's a ebay link if you want to see it: http://cgi.ebay.com/HerStyler-Colorful-Seasons-PURPLE-1-5-Hair-Straightener_W0QQitemZ330347027303QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4cea379b67&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I had a CHI and it never really got my hair the way I wanted it. My hair is VERY thick and it seemed to only stay straight for at most an hour after doing it. One Christmas (maybe 2 years ago) my husband got sick of me complaining and got me a Conair Nano Silver. Nopt to sound snooty but I opened and thought "Conair??" if the CHI didn't work this thing won't! Much to my surprise it does the job!! I was SHOCKED! And the best part was that he got it at Target and it was only $80...not that 80 bucks is cheap but compaired to the CHI it was!!!

My cousin has a chi and every time I would go to her house I would use it. Then my sister in law got this one called "Generic Value Product (GVP)". She loved it so much that my husband decided for valentines he was gonna get me one. I was so happy he did. Its better than the chi and cheaper. They have alot of different patterns and colors. Now when my cousin comes to stay at my place she just leaves her chi at home and always ask if she can use my awesome GVP. This is the one I have Pink Snake Skin. Thanks hubby. :) http://www.sallybeauty.com/gvp-flat-iron/SBS-264866,default,pd.html

Grrr... I have a babyliss and I have hated it since the day I bought it. It came with a 4 year warranty, but you can only return it for in store credit.... from a store I never go to. Boo. The other thing (since I'm sure you're dying to know) is the babyliss' plates don't perfectly line up with the plastic, resulting in pulled hair. I ripped a chunk out of my moms hair yesterday and felt really bad. I am itching to get a chi and wishing I would have gotten one in the first place, but I have a hard time justifying ANOTHER hundred dollar iron. Boo.

I have a 200$ coriolis. Love it. Does great curls, heats fast, straightens wonderfully.

I've been waiting for this post! My hair dryer went out 2 weeks ago, and my straightner 3 months ago! Needless to say I haven't done my hair in a while..... maybe the T3 for me!?

I have a "HAI elite Tong Flat Iron Digital Ceramic Tourmaline 2 inch Hair Straightener, Styling Tool" Copied the OFFICAL name from the website! :). I LOVE it! It was about $125. It has a digital temp dial that you can turn up or down. I usually keep it around 356 degrees. My hair is Super thick and naturally curly and it straightens it perfectly and quickly. The T3 looks awesome however, I don't know if my HAI will ever die? Going on 2.5 years. I can't justify another expensive flat iron purchase until the first one gives up the ghost!

Thanks for the post Mariel, and for mentioning me! I went ahead and bought an InfraShine flat iron because Meagan has one and I've always liked it. I bought it on ebay and didn't realize that I'd gotten the new fancy model called the Aero Plus. It actually can blow a stream of cool air on your hair as it straightens it to set the style. I don't particularly like the blowing air, but I guess it's a nice feature. It doesn't curl my hair as nice as Meagan's. I wish I'd waited until I read your post because I hadn't even considered that being an issue. Oh well. Thanks again for the info, and for fulfilling my request!

Thanks for the info! So, can I put in a request for info on a hairdryer and a curling iron?

we've tried the Chi on my girls' hair - and it just never really did the trick... we ended up using a friends' "as seen on TV" straightener (danged if I can remember the name though...) and have loved it... it's been nice to see the frizz go away for the first time EVER!
