Best Hand-Churned Ice Cream

Here is the best ice cream recipe that has been in my family for years. When we go to my grandparents over the Fourth of July we make homemade ice cream, and we churn it by hand. It's just that much better because we worked hard for it. It's tradition, and brings back great childhood memories. I thought it would be fun to use a hand churned one with my kids and they loved it! Make it for Labor Day- Summer's going fast!

Here are your ingredients: Vanilla, Half and Half, Sugar and Egg Yolks

First, scald the half and half.

While you are waiting for the half and half to scald, mix egg yolks and sugar.

Then gradually add the egg and sugar mixture to the half and half. Then add the vanilla. Mix well and cool. Now for the fun part- churn it in your handy dandy ice cream maker. Now I realize today everyone wants to do it the easy way, plug it in and let it go, but I prefer it this way (letting my sweet hubby do it)

After all that hard work, (actually only 20 min) you have perfect, heavenly, fluffy, melt in your mouth ice cream.

Hand Churned Ice Cream Recipe (makes 4 quarts)

Ingredients:
2 2/3 quarts half and half
4-6 egg yolks
1 2/3 cups sugar
2 1/2 T vanilla

Whip yolks and sugar, until thick and yellow. Heat half and half until scalding. Add yolk mixture gradually. Add vanilla and enjoy!

The best electric ice cream maker on Amazon which got 4 and a half stars, is the Cuisinart 2 Quart ICE-30BC. Whew! $78. It's sleek looking, doesn't take up too much space, and makes great fluffy ice cream.

White Mountain 4 Quart Hand Cranked Ice Cream Freezer Amazon $148. These bad boys aren't easy to come by. This one is quiet, easy to clean and the metal is dishwasher safe.

We always make homemade ice cream for the fourth of july also, a few years ago we splurged on an electric ice cream churner, and you're right, it just isn't the same.
