I'm always wondering what hairstyle would look best with my face shape. Whenever I ask the hairstylist, they don't seem to be much help. So, I've researched it for myself and for you, lovely ladies.
If you have a round face shape such as Drew Barrymore, you want to create less volume around the face and minimize the appearance of roundness.
Try cuts that fall just below the chin, soft graduated layers are great because they make your face appear slimmer and tend to remove bulk and weight from the sides. Consider wispy tapered ends also, they de-emphasize the roundness of your face. Bangs are flattering, but keep them long or sideswept.
Avoid: One-length blunt cuts if you have short hair. Curly hair is also a no-no. These only emphasize your roundness.
Square Face Shapes
(If you're as gorgeous as her- who cares what your hair looks like!)
You do want to play down your strong angular jaw. Texture, such as curls or spiky ends are great. You can get away with short spiky cuts or long sleek styles with layers that start at the jawline and go downward.
Avoid: One length bobs, and blunt bangs. This will make your face look more square.
The oval face- lucky you, this is the most versatile face and you can get away with pretty much anything! Pick your best feature and play off that. If you have great eyes get bang, if you have great bone structure, get a chin length bob that shows it off.
Avoid: short layers that add height to top of your head and short curly hair.
Long or Oblong face shapes. The perfect haircut for you is one that doesn't drag down your face and adds width.
Brow skimming bangs are great, chin length bobs are wonderful because they add width. Curls and waves are good also for adding width.
Avoid: hair that is too long, and way too short.
Heart Shaped Faces. Your pointy chin is the focal point of your face. Draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones instead. Sideswept bangs, and cheekbone layers if your hair is long. If it's short, keep the top layers soft and long.
Avoid: Short, blunt cut bangs and short choppy layers.

I think I need someone to TELL me what shape face I have...it's so hard analyzing yourself! It seems that some people have a really obvious face shape and others are just something in between. But, I agree...hair can either work for or against you. I'll take "for".
Your stylist failed to tell you what cut would look good with your face shape? Boo! I recently went to a class about curly hair (oh I'm a hair stylist fyi) and one point the gal made was that if you are born with a natural texture (curly for example) then it probably looks better on you than the opposite. I wish I could talk all my clients into believing that!
My trouble is my hair! I can't seen to grow it out and have it look nice to get below thchin for my big ole round face! Auuugghhhh
haha - my square face needs likes its crazy hair... of course, while I struggle to lose these 20 pounds (again) my face is looking round and I have to keep the hair long... boo...
A good stylist will suggest not only a good hairstyle to suit your face shape, but one to suit YOUR face shape. Are you getting me?
Even though there are the 5 basic face shapes (Round, Oval, Square, Sweetheart & Triangle), not all hairstyles that suit those face shapes will suit YOU. There is hair texture and hair personality to play with and even though you may have a round face, doesn't mean you can't get a hair cut that would only suit a sqaured face shape....it just means you need to work it!(& the stylist too)
The number 1 job of a stylist is to LISTEN to what a person wants and then intelligently SUGGEST what you think they should have and make it work for the both of you.
A lousy stylist will only TELL you what you should have or may listen, but still do what they want. (How many times has THAT happend ladies?)
My suggestion is find a stylist by word of mouth recommendation, who is willing to listen to you and also get to know you personally. You'll end up having a beautiful relationship.
Remember that when you look at celebrity hair, they have a stylist almost 24/7 to do their hair and makeup. Pick a style that will suit your hair as well as your lifestyle. I mean who really spends hours on their hair to look like a celebrity. (Psss....let me tell you a secret: You really don't have to)
Alright....I've added my two cents.
PS: How do I know all this? Well....you'll just have to trust me ;)
Great tips Suze! Thanks!
um, so long, loosly layered, parted in the middle hair works for all face shapes? Those pics are all the same hair cut!
